Episode 235 – For Andy
It’s been a hard week for Sound Of Hockey. Our good friend, Andy Eide, one third of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, passed away Friday after suffering a stroke on March 18. In this episode, Darren and John pay tribute to their friend.
Andy would want the show to go on, and he would want the guys to talk about the Kraken and their upcoming playoff run, so that’s what happens next.
On this show, SOH also has interviews with Alex Wennberg and Seattle Thunderbirds coach Matt O’Dette.
If you can get through the sad parts at the beginning, it’s a pretty great episode.

After moaning about that game for a bit, the guys consider what has been happening for the club in overtime, where it has been highly unsuccessful. The boys got the band back together (sort of) by having Chris Peters on for his record fourth SOH Podcast interview. It’s another wonky format for this show, as the episode revolves almost entirely around the interview, but there’s lots of good stuff from Chris here.
Peters, the prospect guru for FloHockey.tv, gives his opinions on the Kraken prospect pool and his outlook for guys like Matty Beniers and Shane Wright. He has an interesting take on where he thinks Wright should play this coming season, which you may find controversial. But, he does give good reasoning to support his argument, which should provide good food for thought.

The biggest piece of general hockey news from this past week just so happened to be Louie Domingue’s in-game meal for Game 1 of Pittsburgh’s series against the Rangers, so that gets plenty of discussion.
After diving into Domingue’s culinary choices, the guys shift to a Mailbag from listeners, which covers several different Kraken-related topics.
Finally, the show moves to segments, which this week include You Don’t See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week.
Episode 185 – Please Don’t Kale My Car
The NHL regular season is winding down, and the Seattle Kraken are closing in on a top-five pick in the NHL Draft, thanks to several recent organic losses. In this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, John, Andy, and Darren recap the last few Kraken games up through Tuesday’s loss to the Vancouver Canucks. In fact, they began recording this episode just minutes after that game ended.
After plenty of Kraken talk, you’ll get a WHL Update from WHL correspondent, Andy Eide. Then you’ll get a Western Conference playoff picture update from John.
After that, Darren surprises the guys with an unexpected “Let’s Get Quizzical.”
Following Quizzical, the guys transition to Weekly One-Timers, Then Tweets of the Week and SOH’s Three Stars.

Episode 184 – Featuring Vaughan Rody
This is a fun one, folks! The Sound Of Hockey Podcast couldn’t have timed its interview guest any better, as NHL linesman Vaughan Rody will hang up his stripes after 22 years in the league following Wednesday’s game between the Seattle Kraken and the Colorado Avalanche. Rody has an incredible story to tell, and he lives locally in the Seattle area, so his connections to the Pacific Northwest run deep. He will definitely make you laugh a few times, too, so tune in for this one.
Also in this episode, John, Andy, and Darren do some more gushing over Matty Beniers, who now has two goals in as many home games, and they recap those two Kraken games in full.
After the interview with Vaughan Rody, the guys shift to their regular segments, which are plentiful this week, and cover such topics as fans covering Ryan Hartman’s fine for flipping the bird to Evander Kane and Dryden McKay accepting a six-month suspension for a banned substance.
Segments include Goalie Gear Corner, Bad Boys, You Don’t See That Every Day, and more!

Episode 183 – Matty Mania
It’s been an eventful week for the Seattle Kraken and their fans, as No. 2 overall draft pick Matty Beniers signed his entry-level contract and made his NHL debut against the Calgary Flames. The news generated a ton of buzz around Seattle, and Beniers lived up to the hype in his first official showing. The Kraken have also played four games since the last episode, so John, Andy, and Darren break down those contests before moving to a rare “Mail Bag” segment, which got some great participation from listeners.
After closing the mail bag, Darren discusses the NCAA Frozen Four, which ended with Denver University as national champion. He also talks about the outcome of the Hobey Baker Award and what is happening with players leaving college to sign in the NHL.
Eventually, the guys shift to segments, which this week feature Bad Boys, You Don’t See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week.

Episode 182 – Joey Daccord Returns!
The good news… correction, the GREAT news is that Joey Daccord is back on Sound Of Hockey for his second appearance, and he is once again electrifying! The bad news is that Darren has COVID. But that’s ok, because he has a great time talking to Joey (via Zoom, obvi), and that makes everything better.
The boys are confident that you will love this second interview with Daccord, who shares some awesome stories about playing in Charlotte, getting called up to Seattle, and being part of the Kraken’s home opener.
Before the interview, John, Andy, and Darren recap the Kraken games against Los Angeles, Vegas, and Dallas, then give some general NHL news. After the interview, they shift the show into segments, with the first being an NCAA Frozen Four edition of Games on the Radar. They then move to Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, Tweets of the Week, and Three Stars.
It’s a battle this week, but this show is a very fun one.

Episode 181 – Beniers to the Frozen Four, Dadonov Fiasco
The guys record Episode 181 of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast fresh off a win for Matty Beniers and Michigan, sending that team to the NCAA Frozen Four. The win over Quinnipiac means Beniers watch has been delayed for another week.
In the interim, there’s plenty of Kraken hockey to watch and talk about (though there were only two games to discuss prior to this episode). One thing worth noting is a hot start by Daniel Sprong after he was acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline.
After a hearty dose of Kraken and NCAA talk, John, Andy, and Darren shift to break down the Evgenii Dadonov fiasco in Vegas. They then move into their segments, which this week include Weekly One-Timers, Tweets of the Week, and Three Stars.

Episode 180 – All the Draft Picks
The first NHL Trade Deadline in the history of the Seattle Kraken is now in the rearview, and the Sound Of Hockey Podcast has a LOT to discuss this week. General manager Ron Francis moved Calle Jarnkrok, Mark Giordano, Colin Blackwell, Jeremy Lauzon, Mason Appleton, and Marcus Johansson, and collected a boatload of draft picks. On this episode, hear all about what this means for the future of the franchise and how the team performed in general during this chaotic period.
Aside from plenty of deadline talk about the Kraken, the guys also discuss what happened around the rest of the league by way of “Interesting or Carry On?” Before all that, they break down the two recent Kraken games against the Lightning and Red Wings and chat about what’s happening down on the farm.
The Men’s NCAA Tournament is getting underway this week, so there’s also a fair dose of college hockey talk, plus some Serious Business, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

Episode 179 – Trade Deadline Heating Up
The Trade Deadline is almost upon us, and the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is here to discuss how the first couple transactions of this busy time in the NHL impact the values of potential Kraken trades.
Before they get to that, John, Andy, and Darren recap the two Kraken games played since the last episode. They also give some other quick Seattle-related hits and a “Down on the Farm” update about Matty Beniers.
Other topics touched on this week include Jack Eichel’s salty comments in his return to Buffalo and the MN State High School Hockey Tournament (which Darren loves).
Eventually, the show shifts to segments, which include Bad Boys, Weekly One-Timers, You Don’t See That Every Day, and Sound Of Hockey’s Three Stars.

Episode 178 – Russell Wilson Hour
Just kidding. We promise the guys don’t *actually* talk about Russell Wilson that much on this latest episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast… but they do mention it. Of course, the Wilson news was overshadowed by Jared McCann’s five-year contract extension, which John, Andy, and Darren *do* breakdown at length after discussing the last four Kraken games.
They also discuss some of the other recent roster moves and the Ron Francis presser. That leads nicely into the return of “Translating Ron Francis,” which is always a good time, as well as some trade deadline predictions and praise for Alison Lukan.
Once the Kraken talk dies down, the guys transition into segments, which include You Don’t See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

Before they get to the interview with McCann, the guys shift gears and discuss how the hockey world is responding to the crisis in Ukraine.
After the interview, the show transitions into its segments, which this week feature Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

Episode 176 – Featuring Dennis Williams and Matt O’Dette
It’s a long episode, but a fantastic one. This week, the Sound Of Hockey welcomes the coaches of both local WHL teams, as those teams prepare to play one another in the Battle of the Sound at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday. With Dennis Williams of the Everett Silvertips, the guys discuss the continued success of that organization, the high-end prospects that have played for them, and the many hats that Williams wears as both the GM and head coach. Then O’Dette expresses his excitement to finally be a friend of the pod and shares the differences between coaching in the ECHL versus the WHL. He also talks about the skill on his current team and the impact that some new additions have made this season.
Both interviews are great.
Aside from those interviews, you’ll also hear some Kraken talk, as John, Andy, and Darren discuss Seattle’s recent fruitless Canadian road trip and a strange home game against the New York Islanders. John also shares some tidbits from a recent presentation made by Tod and Tim Leiweke about the state of the franchise.
After the interviews, the guys shift to segments, which feature You Don’t See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

Episode 175 – Mea Culpa (But Not Really)
The guys start the latest episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast by falling on the… spear (sort of)… for a mishap on their last show. They then dive right into Kraken talk, recapping an eventful week for the team, which sandwich a nice win and a skills exhibition between two rather stinky losses.
John, Andy, and Darren then shift their focus to the NHL as a whole, which had some big stories over the past week like coach firings, Jack Eichel returning, and Tyler Toffoli getting traded.
They then move into segments, which cover a lot of ground this week. Segments include Bad Boys, Goalie Gear Corner, You Don’t See That Every Day, and Weekly One-Timers.
Oh, and all of this got recorded while the USA men were playing against Slovakia, so you get some real-time reactions from the boys.

Episode 174 – On a High Note
The Sound Of Hockey Podcast is back from the All-Star break, and the guys start this episode out on an extremely high note.
With no Kraken games to talk about (this show was recorded on Wednesday before Seattle faced Arizona), John, Andy, and Darren instead spend time breaking down the women’s game between Team USA and Team Canada at the Winter Olympics.
They then shift to some general Kraken talk, including taking a look back at the first half and making some predictions for the second half.
Next, the guys recap some of the All-Star Game festivities and Gary Bettman’s press conference at that event, before moving onto their segments.
Segments this week include Serious Business, Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

Darren and Andy spoke with the TV voice of the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena prior to Kraken morning skate last week. John does not disappoint. He tells fantastic stories that range from the beginning of Desert Storm to punching mascots, and he takes you through the journey that led him to becoming the legendary broadcaster that he is today.
This conversation will make you laugh and feel inspired all at once. When it’s done, you’ll think you’ve known John personally for years.

Episode 172 – Featuring Karson Kuhlman
The guys cover a LOT in this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, and in the process, they introduce you to the newest member of the Seattle Kraken, Karson Kuhlman. Kuhlman was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins last week, so he talks about the whirlwind it has been to get to Seattle and get acclimated to his new team and city. He also shares some thoughts on playing for the UMD Bulldogs and the Bruins and explains why Darren is wrong about Duck, Duck, Grey Duck.
Aside from the chat with Karson, the guys also dig into the last three Kraken games since the previous episode, in which Seattle won two out of three against the Sharks, Blues, and Panthers. John, Andy, and Darren are especially amped up about the outcome of the Florida game. They also talk about the Coachella Valley Firebirds jersey and Darren defends Jeremy Lauzon again.
Before getting to the Kuhlman interview, they dig into the very difficult topic of racism in hockey, hoping that the conversation can fuel even the smallest change in a few folks out there.
After the Kuhlman interview, the guys move on to their segments, which this week include Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars.

It’s a big-time episode this week with a big-time guest! As the Seattle Kraken prepare to take on the San Jose Sharks, the guys welcome Sharks rookie center Jasper Weatherby (read about him here) onto the Sound Of Hockey Podcast. Jasper is an awesome guy who surprised the hockey world by making the Sharks out of training camp this season. Off the ice, he has been a leader in the hockey world on social justice issues and has plenty of ties to the Pacific Northwest. It’s a fun interview.
Also on this episode, John, Andy, and Darren start by giving their commentary on the current media-related train wreck in Edmonton, where Leon Draisaitl recently got into a tiff with Jim Matheson.
They then shift to the latest Kraken news including the team finally breaking its nine-game losing streak with a win over an outstanding Marc-Andre Fleury and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Darren of course gives his thoughts on the Kraken revealing a team puppy, and after that the guys move onto general hockey news.
Segbits this week include Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, Three Stars, and Tweets of the Week.

Episode 170 – Feeling for the Boys
The guys are back in BarrDown Studios for Episode 170 of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, which brings the shenanigans up a notch!
The Seattle Kraken are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, and John, Andy, and Darren are recording fresh off of Thursday’s loss to the St. Louis Blues. But despite the miserable spiral of the Kraken, the guys are feeling surprisingly optimistic about the future of the team. So, if you’re a Kraken fan needing a lift, this is the podcast for you!
This episode starts with some Wes McCauley silliness, followed by discussion about Kodak Black taking the hockey world by… storm. It then shifts to the outlook of the Kraken for quite a while, before turning to the hockey world as a whole.
Plenty of discussion about the Team USA Olympic roster (which includes Matty Beniers), Tuukka Rask returning to the Bruins, and Evander Kane somehow still being pursued.
Segbits include Goalie Gear Corner, Serious Business, Bad Boys, Weekly One-Timers, and MORE!

On this podcast, the guys talk through the three losses the Seattle Kraken have suffered since the Christmas holiday, as well as the latest injury and COVID news from the team. They also discuss some of the very cool off-ice developments that happened at Climate Pledge Arena during the Kraken game against the Vancouver Canucks.
Once they’ve given plenty of attention to the Kraken, John, Andy, and Darren go outside of Seattle to share their thoughts on the cancellations of the IIHF World Junior Championship and the Women’s U18 tournament. They also touch on the Winter Classic before moving on to segments.
Segments this week include Bad Boys, Goalie Gear Corner, and Three Stars.

Episode 168 – A Tough Week for Johnny Calendar
A quick disclaimer, the guys recorded on Sunday night, and lots of COVID-related news broke on Monday, so some of what’s said in this show has already changed. In line with that, Darren opens this episode of Sound Of Hockey by calling it Episode 186, but he’s just trying keep you on your toes (it’s actually Episode 168).
Though it had only been a few days since the last episode and only one game had passed for the Kraken, there was still a fair amount of Kraken news to report, as Jamie Oleksiak and Carson Soucy went into COVID protocol and Brandon Tanev got injured. So, John, Andy, and Darren discuss the Edmonton game at length and break down how those pieces of news broke.
They then discuss what is happening in the hockey world as a whole from a COVID perspective and get into some conspiracy theories about why Paul Maurice resigned as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets.
Next, Andy gives a WHL Update, which leads nicely into a World Junior Championship primer. That tournament gets underway later this week.
Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner, You Don’t See That Every Day, Bad Boys, and Three Stars.

Episode 167 – The One Where the Guys Forget Weekly One-Timers
Thrilled to be back in BarrDown Studios, things go a bit haywire on this latest episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast. Darren, John, and Andy start off well, exuberant about being back in the same room. But the show hits the fan toward the end, when Andy notices that a certain important weekly segbit has been completely skipped. Hilarity ensues.
The guys start this episode by discussing the Kraken’s controversial foray into NFT’s, before meticulously breaking down the games that have passed since the last show.
When they’ve gotten through all the Kraken news, the guys discuss the firestorm of COVID around the NHL and what it means. They then give a WHL Update before some World Junior Championship discussion. They eventually move on to segbits, and that’s where things go sideways.
Segbits this week include (sort of) Get Off My Lawn, Goalie Gear Corner, Three Stars, and eventually Weekly One-Timers.

Episode 166 – Future Considerations
The Sound Of Hockey Podcast has a LOT to discuss this week, after the Seattle Kraken experienced significant ups and downs over the course of a week, and the hockey world at large had some big-time stories. There’s plenty of Kraken talk in the early going here, as the guys break down the Detroit, Edmonton, and Pittsburgh games before expanding outside of Seattle.
Even before all that, John, Andy, and Darren open the show by discussing a dog doing its business on the center ice logo for the Philadelphia Flyers, which ironically came right around the time of that team firing its head coach. And speaking of coaches being fired, the Vancouver Canucks cleaned house and brought in one of Darren’s favorite coaches ever in Bruce Boudreau.
Other stories that get touched on in this episode are the Jason Spezza suspension for kneeing Neal Pionk, who was coincidentally also suspended for kneeing in the same game. And of course, the guys do not miss the unbelievable Trevor Zegras to Sonny Milano goal or Sergei Federov pulling his goalie in overtime.

This episode starts with Darren needing to get something off his chest, so he dives right into a Get Off My Lawn, while Andy and John desperately try to calm him down. Then they get to their Kraken talk, which is plentiful.
After beating Washington and Carolina at home, Seattle has been on the road, where it has beaten the Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres, but lost to the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. There’s lots to unpack from these victories, including an injury and an illness, impressive play by Will Borgen, and improved goaltending.
Once the Kraken talk dies down, the guys tour around the NHL via Serious Business, where they discuss the waiving of Matt Murray and Evander Kane and the firing of Marc Bergevin and… well… pretty much everyone else in Montreal.
Segments this week include Weekly One-Timers, Goalie Gear Corner, and Three Stars.

Within the Kraken section that starts the show, the guys really get into what the fan reaction was during the very tough stretch and what it meant to the team, as well as some mascot news. John, Andy, and Darren then look ahead at upcoming matchups for Seattle, before diving into their usual segbits.
You will get plenty of Kraken talk from this one, folks!

They also share some updates on what’s coming from the Kraken for the rest of the week.
They then move on to the story that gripped the whole hockey world this past week, which was the Kyle Beach and Chicago Blackhawks situation. Interestingly, John, Andy, and Darren did not go into the show with the intention of talking about it that much, being that it has been discussed so broadly over the last week. But once they got talking about it, it was hard to stop.
We then get an update of what’s happening down on the farm, a Serious Business, Goalie Gear Corner, and Bad Boys. We also hear a Get Off My Lawn from Darren, who is irked that other larger outlets seem to have no issue stealing content.

Also in this episode, Andy and Darren chat with Chris Joswiak, the pro rep for Brian’s Custom Sports, because who doesn’t like a good Brian’s setup? BONUS EPISODE – Outstanding Interview with Joey Daccord
This very special BONUS EPISODE of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is an instant classic. John, Andy, and Darren agree that Seattle Kraken netminder Joey Daccord is truly one of their favorite guests to ever appear on the show, so they hope you’ll feel the same after listening.
This episode is dedicated entirely to that interview, which runs longer than most guest segments, as the guys first dig into Joey’s viral interview after his first-ever NHL win, then get into his hockey journey, his experiences at Arizona State, and his first impressions of playing for the Seattle Kraken. Darren can’t help himself but to ask goalie-to-goalie about Joey’s mental processes that he uses to perform consistently, and… of course… his gear.
Here is the link to view Joey’s mask, which he discusses in detail during the interview. If you’re wondering, the hidden “Sparky” image he discusses appears behind the holes where Daccord’s left ear would go. A tentacle is pointing at the small, subtle caricature.
Episode 154 – Training Camp Is Coming and the Iceplex Is Awesome

Episode 152- Fun FactoidsIt’s another (mostly) fun episode of Sound Of Hockey, filled with interesting factoids (but also some very sad discussion) and terrible puns. This week, Darren starts the show with a quick update on his goaltending-related mental state, which was discussed at length in Episode 151. Then the guys delve into the latest Seattle news, such as Matty Beniers returning to the University of Michigan and Antoine Bibeau being signed by the Kraken.
Later, John, Andy, and Darren discuss the ongoing situation with the Arizona Coyotes, who are effectively being kicked out of Gila River Arena by the City of Glendale. What does this mean for the franchise? Will they actually stay in the Phoenix area or be forced to find a new home?
John gives a quick update on the IIHF Women’s World Championship, which is in full swing, before the gang moves on to this week’s segments.
The first segment is everyone’s favorite segment… GOALIE GEAR CORNER!!! It’s officially Goalie Gear Corner season, and this week, the guys break down three different items, specifically Aaron Dell’s setup, an incredible Ohio State setup, and Adin Hill’s new Sharks mask.
Other segments include Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week.

Episode 151 – The Goalie SlumpOn this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, Darren reveals that he’s in a pretty terrible slump as a beer league goalie, and he just needs to talk about it. John and Andy provide some not-so-helpful suggestions, but hopefully just getting it out in the world is enough to help Darren turn it around. No breakthroughs happen in this session, but stay tuned to future episodes.
After the therapy session, the guys discuss some of the minor Kraken signings from this week and the revelation of finalized NHL schedules, with times now solidified. We also get a brief WHL Update from our WHL correspondent Andy Eide.
Darren then shares some info about the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey program. He spoke with the chairperson from Save Seawolf Hockey this week and wrote a story about their drive to rescue the program from extinction (you can donate at saveseawolfhockey.com). Episode 149 – Signings, Trades, and Hijinks
On this week’s Sound Of Hockey Podcast, the guys have a lot to get through from around the NHL and specifically within the Seattle Kraken organization, where three big-time free agents joined the ranks last week.
So, John, Andy, and Darren break that down first and consider what those additions mean for the inaugural roster. They also share their thoughts on what the Kraken have put together in general, before moving on to the rest of the league.
In talking about the rest of the NHL, with so many players on the move over the past couple weeks, the hosts take an approach of discussing only those teams and players who have created the most intrigue with their respective moves. It’s like a pre-filtered version of “Interesting or Carry On.”
Segments on this episode include Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week.

Episode 147 – Behind the Ropes at the Expansion Draft
Well, Kraken fans, it has been a WILD week, and there’s more to come! This episode of Sound Of Hockey is quite unique, as Darren is mostly driving the bus and doing the heavy lifting on this one without his usual wingmen. Andy does make a couple of appearances, though, as he and Darren take you behind the ropes at the Expansion Draft event to give you commentary from all of the players that were in attendance – Chris Driedger, Jordan Eberle, Brandon Tanev, Jamie Oleksiak, Mark Giordano, and Haydn Fleury – plus Seattle Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol and general manager Ron Francis and Ryan Clark from The Athletic.
Aside from the very fun audio clips from the Expansion Draft, Darren gives his reaction to the selections and lack of side deals associated. He also shares the latest Seattle news including the NHL schedule release and the details of the NHL Entry Draft.
This is a short, unique, and fun episode.

BONUS EPISODE – Expansion Draft Protected List Reactions
What, you thought the Sound Of Hockey Podcast was going to wait until AFTER the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft to publish its next episode? Well, with the entire hockey world abuzz with discussion about the Expansion Draft protected lists that got released on Sunday, there was just no way that John, Andy, and Darren could have waited that long to bring you their reactions.
This episode is a little more “from the hip” than regular episodes of the show, but the hosts do everything they can to touch on all of the big Seattle Kraken news from the past few days. Topics covered include the very chaotic pre-draft trade frenzy that closed Saturday, Ron Francis’s latest media availability, and of course the protection lists.
The review of the Expansion Draft protected lists largely comes by way of a game of “Interesting or Carry-On,” but the guys are very careful to touch on all the biggest-named players that have been exposed for Wednesday’s Expansion Draft. This show should bring you fully up to speed for that event.

When they aren’t talking about food poisoning, the guys share the latest scuttlebutt on the Seattle coaching front and what Rod Brind’Amour’s re-signing in Carolina means for the Kraken (spoiler: they aren’t hiring Rod). Also on the Kraken topic, John, Andy, and Darren react to the team’s hiring of JT Brown as its first TV color analyst.
